“Sometimes you need a new headshot on the fly but can't book a professional photographer. Pull out your iPhone and practice until you get the one shot that will get you that gig!.” - Marianne Rom
Introduction:
There will always be a time as a parent manager when you know you need to update your young actor's headshots but haven't got the money or found the time to book in with a professional photographer.
With that said, here are 7 quick tips for taking the best home headshot without being a professional photographer.👊
Find a clean clear background or go outside and find greenery in the shade but not too dark.
Wear solid colours only so that the clothing doesn't compete with the face.
If you are shotting from an iPhone go to SETTINGS > FORMAT > MOST COMPATIBLE. HEIC is not the best format when taking headshots on your own phone.
Make sure sunlight is not directly shining in on the face/body because it creates shadows and unnatural colouring on face (and background).
Keep iPhone on regular photo settings. Do not use 'PORTRAIT MODE' setting but you can hold the phone in portrait or landscape.
Face forward (even very slightly - very slightly to one side) and step forward ever so slightly. This will ensure best position and reduce shadows.
Do not use phone 'ZOOM IN' features!
Take phone from waste up with at least two inches clear on top of the head. This will ensure photo can be cropped to perfection (if necessary).
Phone should be held at eye level and angled downwards about 10-15 degrees. Never have the phone tilted upwards as it could distort the face and create shadows --- and nobody likes to see snot in the nose!
Practice makes perfect, or at least close enough for when the funds aren't available.
For young actors, I suggest professional headshots every 8 months unless there are any drastic visual changes. Other than that I suggest taking lots of home headshots often and keep at it. Fill up a boring night in when you are bored and have nothing else to do. Or even better, book an hour into the schedule once every couple weeks and get into making good habits. You will soon find out what you love and what you or your young performer will tolerate. Make life easier on yourself!

Nice things my clients say
Marianne is a lovely lady with a wealth of knowledge around personal branding. Super helpful tips and always keen to give a lending hand with personalised advice in an industry that can be tricky to navigate.
Just had a wonderful branding / digital marketing session with Marianne Rom - highly recommended for all actors!
Hi Marianne, I want to say a huge thank you again for everything you had shown and taught me last night! Your knowledge and expertise extend far beyond what I thought I needed and I am very appreciative of the time you gave me last night. I’ll make sure I email you the PDFs, work on the bio today and email Hunter about my work – I cannot wait for the next part!
I had the pleasure of attending two social etiquette classes run by Marianne, which focused specifically on mastering the Q&A and interview segments of pageantry. During the classes I learnt techniques and skills to improve my articulation and diction. I was also taught methods to help calm my nerves during public speaking and one on one interviews, which are situations I have always struggled with. I truly believe the knowledge and guidance Marianne provided during her classes is what enabled me to win best in Q&A and best in one on one interview in the 2019 FACE WA Pageant. The new found knowledge I have gained from my lessons with Marianne will not only benefit my pageant journey but also help me during future job interviews and public speaking opportunities. Thanks to Marianne I am now able to answer questions in a clear and concise manner, which will also help me in my future career as a health professional.
